Environmental Benefits of using Natural Paints

Natural paint:

Conventional paints are derived from petro-chemicals but natural paints are made from organic substances and water based solvents. These paints do not contain hazardous chemical solvents.

Advantage of using natural paints in marine application:

Huge amount of paint is needed to paint the exterior of large logistic and passenger ships. The Earth has almost 71% of water which is a home to varieties of marine species and plants. When the ships sail in the seas during their prolong sea voyages, the exterior painted bodies of these ships come in contact with sea water. If the exterior of the ship is painted with toxic chemical paint, it causes sea water pollution thereby creating danger to the lives of enormous sea species. As per the latest research conclusions, the remains of high level antifouling marine paints in the Antarctic sea water, is causing big threats to the lives of the Blue whales in this region. Natural marine paint is biodegradable and it does not contain any toxic or antifouling element, therefore it does not pollute sea water and it is harmless to the sea species.

Other main advantages of using natural paints:

As stated above, conventional paints are made of unsustainable resources like petro chemicals. These unsustainable elements contain very large proportion of carbon, which results in global warming and climate change. Where as natural paints contain only sustainable materials with very less carbon content, hence they do not pollute the atmosphere. Modern building paints contain very large proportion of mineral oil and we all know that fossil oils are finite and unsustainable resources. Excessive use of fossil oils will make the world run short of it in the near future. Also traditional paint emits poisonous fumes while it is being applied on the walls thereby contributing to low level atmospheric ozone layer penetration which results in global warming. In order to avoid the destruction of low level atmospheric ozone layer while painting buildings, use of natural paints is the best option.

Another main important advantage of natural paint is that it creates very less pollution and harmful wastes while it is being manufactured. Actually, while manufacturing natural paint, almost all naturally compostable by products are maintained and the carbon emitted during this manufacturing process is reabsorbed by the new crop of plants.

Advantages of using natural paints in the home:

Conventional paints essentially contain hazardous chemical colorants or pigments, binding elements and solvents and as the paint dries after painting, it emits toxic fumes in the home atmosphere which can cause serious health problems like asthma or allergy to the home occupants. The volatile organic compounds that are released in the home atmosphere while the paint starts drying can cause toxic air pollution in your home resulting in allergies and skin rashes. Chemical sensitiveness results in chest complaints, cough and asthma problems as well. As natural paints do not contain toxic chemical ingredients they are very safe for home applications. Also toys painted with natural paints are very safe for children.
